Yellowstone...Where the Buffalo Roam

From the wide meadows to the forested hills, we saw magnificent buffalo throughout Yellowstone National Park. Whether a solitary bull rambling alone, or languishing in a huge herd, they are an imposing presence. Their massive wooly head, and muscular bulk disguises their strength and speed - males can weigh up to 2,000 pounds, and can run up to 35 mph continuously for 4 to 5 hours, and can jump a 6 foot fence from a 20 foot running start. Knowing that, we imagined the amazing skill of the Native American tribes who hunted these powerful animals.

They gathered around the rivers and streams, lounging near the watering hole in Lamar Valley, trying to beat the summer heat. Occassionally we would see them crossing the roadway en masse, stopping traffic and oblivious to the long lines of traffic queuing up to watch them pass.

A Baby Buff, hanging out with Mom.... there were lots of youngsters in the herd. Calves weigh between 30 and 70 lbs at birth.

I wondered what they thought of us, strangers in their domain, watching them meander on their way under the watchful eyes of the park rangers

Lamar Valley - A Wild Playground

We visited the area in and around Lamar Valley several times during our week in the park. Located in the northeast corner of the park, it offered wide open vistas and a great place to see wildlife. The skies were a brilliant blue with billowing white clouds.

An eagle scans the valley from a treetop perch - fierce and the epitome of Eagle-Eyed!

We saw many Pronghorn Antelope, including several does with their fawns.

Rushing Waters and Serene Lakes

Even in the middle of summer, waterfalls, streams and placid lakes were plentiful throughout the park, bringing respite from the hot dry days.

Yellowstone Lake, gentle waves lapping the shore

Thundering waters of the Lower Falls

And the calm waters of Swan Lake that attracted a family of Swans :)

and a small herd of Elk -

Everybody in the Pool!

And a clear cool stream where this wild boy celebrated his 4th birthday!

Happy Birthday Murphy!
